Bluegrass recordings are instantly recognizable, for a variety of reasons.  But what if you want to portray bluegrass in a new light, or to reach audiences whose might be prejudiced against purely conventional bluegrass?

At Manifold Recording, we tried an experiment with bluegrass band Hank and the Current in order to demonstrate some techniques which, on the one hand, honor the traditional sounds bluegrass fans love while, at the same time, using those sounds in unconventional musical styles, stretching on beyond the current reach of traditional bluegrass music.

In this one hour session, we will describe our approach to the challenge we gave ourselves, from production and arrangement, to recording theory and practice, and we'll talk about specific findings and techniques that worked (or didn't) as we created a recording of a bluegrass group that definitely stretches what can be done with the bluegrass sonic palette.  If you do any bluegrass recording (as a musician or as an engineer), you'll have a chance to see (and hear) how convention and invention came together for this session.
